Ukraine’s nuclear power plants have reduced their output after a night of shelling on December 6, the International Atomic Energy Agency has reported, "Komersant Ukrainian".
“As a result of large-scale military activity last night, the power grid was disrupted, and the Ukrainian nuclear power plants that are operating were forced to reduce their electricity production. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated his call for military restraint to avoid a nuclear accident,” the IAEA said in a post on social network X.
The agency also reported that external power was temporarily cut off at Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has not generated electricity since 2022 due to Russian occupation. “After a half-hour outage, the plant was connected to a 330 kV transmission line, but the [main] 750 kV line remains disconnected,” the IAEA said.
Shelling of the energy sector
As a reminder, on the night of December 6, Russian troops launched a large-scale missile and drone strike on energy infrastructure in a number of regions.
The Russians targeted electricity generation, distribution and transmission facilities in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Lviv, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv regions.
In addition, Russian troops attacked DTEK’s thermal power plants in different regions of Ukraine. The equipment was seriously damaged.
Ukrenergo reported that the volume of previously forecasted measures to limit electricity consumption has been increased today.
