Ukrainian drones strike two more key Russian refineries

18 September 12:19

At night and in the morning of September 18, Ukrainian drones carried out another large-scale attack on Russian oil industry facilities. Key enterprises in two regions of the Russian Federation were hit, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Attack on the Volgograd Oil Refinery

The Command of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation has officially confirmed the attack on Lukoil’s Volgograd refinery, one of the most powerful oil refineries in Russia. The enterprise has a capacity of 14.8 million tons per year and is one of the top 10 refineries in the country, supplying the needs of the Russian armed forces.

At about 1:30 am, up to 15 explosions were heard over the southern part of Volgograd. Local residents reported powerful detonations in the industrial zone where the plant is located. A fire was reported near the refinery. According to preliminary information, the refinery has been shut down.

Russian air defense announced the interception of 11 Ukrainian drones over the Volgograd region (43 targets in five regions in total). Stalingrad airport was closed for 4 hours, and several flights to Moscow were canceled. Governor Andrei Bocharov acknowledged the damage to residential buildings from the debris, but remained silent about the attack on the refinery.

Strike on the refinery in Bashkortostan

At about 10:00 a.m., the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat petrochemical complex in Bashkortostan, one of the largest oil refining and petrochemical production complexes in Russia. Two airplane-type drones struck the facility, causing a fire.

According to Ukrainian sources, the ELOU-AVT-4 unit, a primary oil refining complex, was damaged. The plant implements a full cycle of processing hydrocarbon raw materials, producing gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, liquefied gases, polyethylene and other petroleum products.

The head of Bashkortostan, Radiy Khabirov, confirmed the attack, noting that the active and passive defenses of the enterprise were activated, and the guards opened fire to kill.

“Allies” disapprove

Over the past month, Ukrainian drones have carried out a series of targeted attacks on key Russian oil refineries and fuel infrastructure facilities. For example, in late August, Ukrainian Armed Forces drones attacked refineries in Krasnodar and Syzran, and recently unmanned systems confirmed the damage to one of Russia’s largest refineries, followed by the largest oil export terminal Primorsk and the Kirishinefteorgsintez refinery, one of Russia’s two largest oil refineries. Experts estimate that Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have shut down 17% of refining capacity, and this figure is only growing.

As a result of these attacks, a number of refineries shut down operations, and oil transportation via the Druzhba pipeline was temporarily suspended. Against the backdrop of these events, several regions of Russia have already begun to restrict the sale of gasoline – fuel is sold with coupons for businesses, and prices for AI-95 are rising rapidly

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Western partners do not support Ukraine’s campaign of strikes on Russian refineries, Bloomberg reported recently. After all, Europe is known to avoid serious measures that could cause disruptions in oil supplies. Ukrainian attacks are already gradually leading to an increase in world fuel prices, which the “allies” do not like.
