Ukrainian fruit in the UAE and Saudi Arabia: potential is growing despite challenges
21 April 15:35
Ukrainian agricultural exports continue to look for new markets, and the Gulf countries are among the most promising destinations. However, the dynamics of fruit supplies to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia remains complex and volatile, "Komersant Ukrainian" writes, citing a market research by Pro-Consulting.
According to the monitoring data, the export of Ukrainian fruit to the region is subject to fluctuations due to both internal and external factors. The main challenges include economic crises, logistics constraints, the consequences of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, and global demand fluctuations. In 2022, these factors led to a significant decrease in the volume and value of supplies.
Against this backdrop, Ukrainian producers were forced to reconsider their strategies for accessing foreign markets, focusing in particular on adapting to new conditions and changing logistics routes.
Apples in the lead, berries in search of solutions
Apples traditionally occupy the top positions in the structure of exports to the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

These products demonstrate stable sales volumes and the largest presence on the shelves of retail chains in the region.

At the same time, the segment of berries, especially strawberries, faced a number of restrictions. In 2020-2021, supplies were almost stopped. Exports were carried out in small batches, at high cost, which did not allow for competitive prices. As a result, the products were not included in key statistical reports due to small volumes.
Seasonality as an advantage: when demand increases
The most active export periods are the summer months. It is at this time that an increase in supply volumes is recorded. The main reason is the traditional increase in demand in the Gulf countries for fresh fruit in the face of high air temperatures. In particular, in 2023 and early 2024, there was a gradual recovery of interest in Ukrainian products from the UAE’s trading partners. This suggests the potential for a steady increase in supplies in the medium term.
The market needs stability
The analysis of the situation shows that the UAE and Saudi Arabian markets retain high potential for Ukrainian fruit producers. Demand for natural products from consumers in these countries opens up additional export opportunities.
However, a number of factors remain critical. These include complicated logistics, specific contractual terms, the need to ensure stability of supply and compliance with import legislation.
To strengthen the position of Ukrainian producers in these markets, it is advisable to conclude long-term contracts, create efficient supply chains and develop seasonal supply strategies. If these conditions are met, Ukrainian fruit products will be able to compete with producers from other countries already present in the region.
Although the situation remains challenging, the positive dynamics in some seasons and the growing interest of importers indicate real potential for growth. With systematic export support and adaptation to the region’s specifics, Ukraine can develop a sustainable presence in the Gulf fruit market.
