Ukrainian chess players failed at the World Rapid and Blitz Championships

Ukrainian chess players have not made any significant achievements at the World Rapid and Blitz Championships, which are being held these days under the auspices of FIDE in New York. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

The best of our athletes in rapid were Maria Muzychuk in the women’s section, who took 12th place out of 110 participants, and Oleksandr Bortnik, who took 18th place in the open tournament.

Rapid

The men’s open tournament was won by Russian player Volodar Murzin, who played under the FIDE flag and scored 10 points in 13 rounds.

Ukrainian chess players took the following places:

  • 18. Oleksandr Bortnik (2642) – 8.5 points;
  • 66. Andriy Volokitin (2569) – 7;
  • 68. Vasyl Ivanchuk (2647) – 7;
  • 150. Oleksiy Bilich (2450) – 5;
  • 164. Viktor Matviyishen (2436) – 4.

The women’s tournament was won by Hampi Koneru, a chess player from India, who scored 8.5 points in 11 rounds. Ukrainian chess players took the following places:

  • 12. Maria Muzychuk (2422) – 7.5;
  • 17. Anna Muzychuk (2408) – 7;
  • 46. Natalia Zhukova (2242) – 6.

Blitz

The World Blitz Championship is not yet over, but all Ukrainian chess players have already lost their chances of winning. According to the results of the first day of play, the top 8 players formed playoff pairs that will play for the championship today. There are no Ukrainians among them.

In the open tournament, Oleksandr and Mykola Bortnik took 11th and 12th place, and the legendary Ukrainian champion Vasyl Ivanchuk took 66th place.

Among the women, the best Ukrainian was Hanna Muzychuk, who, however, took 15th place.
