Ukrainian women are more likely than men to start their own businesses, but less likely to become directors of new companies

Almost 155 thousand new sole proprietorships were opened by women in the first 10 months of 2024. In total, this is 61% of all new sole proprietorships in 2024. This is reported by the Opendatabot platform, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
As noted in the study, before the war, this figure did not exceed 51%.
In which regions women most often start a business
Most new sole proprietorships are opened by women in Sumy (63.3%), Poltava (63.2%), Khmelnytsky (63.1%), Odesa (63.1%), and Kyiv (62.6%) regions.
The lowest percentage of registrations is in the frontline and occupied regions. In Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions, this figure ranges from 50 to 57.8%.
In terms of specific figures, men have opened 99,860 individual entrepreneurs this year, while women have opened 154,920.

In what areas do women entrepreneurs work most often?
The overwhelming majority of women open individual entrepreneurs in the field of individual services – 89%. This is led by hairdressing and beauty salons (94%) and physical comfort activities, mainly massage parlors, solariums, spas and baths, etc.
Other popular areas of entrepreneurship among women are clothing production (85%), education (82.3%), and social assistance (81.5%).
It is worth noting that one individual entrepreneur can work in several industries at the same time.
According to Opendatabot, the number of female directors of new companies has also increased this year – 34%. In October, this figure reached a record 38.8%.
The highest percentage of female directors is in Chernihiv (38.8%), Donetsk (37.4%), and Dnipro (37.2%) regions.

But, as they say, in the overall standings, men are still leading in the nomination “directors of new enterprises” by a fairly large margin. as of November this year, 19,905 men have become directors of new companies. There are 10,302 women who have become directors.
