Ukrainian football revives youth championship: new rules and requirements
23 December 2025 06:28
Ukrainian football is preparing for the return of the U21 national championship, which should once again become an important link between youth and adult football. The Ukrainian Football Association announced the resumption of the tournament, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
When and under what conditions will the U21 championship return
According to the UAF’s decision, starting from the 2026/2027 season, the presence of a U21 team in the structure of each Ukrainian Premier League club will become a mandatory license requirement.
At the same time, the actual return of the youth championship to the competition calendar is scheduled for next season so that clubs can prepare infrastructure and squads in advance.
Why the tournament is being restored
The UAF explains that after the elimination of the U21 Championship in 2021, a significant number of football academy graduates
- were left without regular playing practice;
- failed to adapt to adult football;
- or were forced to end their careers early.
The new-old tournament should become a bridge between the youth and professional levels, preserving the human resource potential of Ukrainian football.
Flexible regulations for clubs
The regulations of the updated championship provide for elements of flexibility. In particular:
- up to five players over the age of 21 will be allowed in the match application;
- first-team players will be able to recover from injuries;
- young players will have a chance to play alongside more experienced partners.
This format, according to the UAF, should increase the level of competition and the practical benefits of the competition.
Experience of previous years
The U21 Youth Championship has existed in Ukraine for 17 years. The last winner of the tournament before it was canceled was Dynamo.
After the 2021 reform, clubs were offered to integrate youth teams into the First and Second Leagues. However, due to financial and organizational difficulties, only a few clubs chose this path, while most clubs disbanded their youth teams.
Support from the football community
The initiative to resume the tournament was widely supported in the football community. In particular, it was praised by the head coach of the Ukrainian national team, Serhiy Rebrov.
In addition to the revival of the U21, the UAF’s strategy includes
- integration of teams from U10 to U17 into the club vertical;
- formation of a full cycle of player training;
- reducing the loss of talented youth in the transition to adult football.
