The interior of the Ukrainian restaurant Gribova Hata in Bukovel has been named one of the top ten best restaurants in the world in 2025 by the authoritative international magazine Dezeen, one of the most influential media in the field of architecture, design and interiors. This is stated in the annual Dezeen review, which recognizes the brightest gastronomic spaces of the year from around the world, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The annual review published by the magazine highlighted the most interesting restaurants of the year – from an “urban greenhouse” in Mexico City to a bright and colorful restaurant in Shanghai, decorated by film director Wong Kar Wai.

This prestigious rating also includes the Ukrainian restaurant Gribova Khata in the village of Polyanytsia in Ivano-Frankivsk region, where Ukrainian traditional dishes are served in a modern interpretation.

What is this rating and why is it prestigious?

Dezeen annually compiles a list of restaurants that:

  • demonstrate an innovative approach to design;
  • combine architecture, local context and gastronomy;
  • set global trends in interiors.

In 2025, the selection includes establishments from Mexico, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, Canada, Romania, and Ukraine, which is a landmark recognition for Ukrainian design at the global level.

“Gribova Hata” in Bukovel: what is unique about it?

The Gribova Khata restaurant, located in the village of Polianytsia (Ivano-Frankivsk region), specializes in Ukrainian cuisine in a modern interpretation. Its interior was created by the Ukrainian architectural studio YOD Group.

The restaurant’s name translates as “house of mushrooms,” and this idea became the key to both the menu and spatial design.

The mushroom theme determined the entire visual image of the restaurant:

  • rounded shapes that resemble mushroom caps;
  • soft, organic colors;
  • furniture made of mycelium – the root structure of mushrooms;
  • natural textures and the feeling of a “grown” space.

YOD Group Managing Partner Volodymyr Nepyivoda explained that the architecture developed as organically as a mushroom grows from mycelium – gradually, with respect for the context and materials.

How the restaurant space is organized

“Gribova Khata consists of one large hall, which is divided into three functional areas:

  • cheese zone
  • meat zone;
  • a zone of drinks.

This division symbolizes the basic components of traditional Ukrainian cuisine.

The interior is dominated by two materials:

  • textured plaster;
  • local travertine, a porous rock quarried in a quarry near Ternopil.

What other restaurants are in Dezeen’s top 10

Along with Grybova Khata, the following restaurants also made the Dezeen list:

  • Plumbago (Mexico) – an “urban greenhouse” among the concrete metropolis;
  • Town (UK) – a bright restaurant with a space-age aesthetic;
  • Side A (USA) – a restaurant and vinyl bar with a DJ zone;
  • Mi Shang (China) – a space by director Wong Kar Wai with a cinematic atmosphere;
  • Millo (Romania) – a theatrical gastronomic space;
  • Lina Stores (UK) – a restaurant in a former bank building;
  • Challe (Japan) – a combination of Mexican and Japanese cultures;
  • Mimi (Canada) – a gastronomic space with jazz and DJ sets;
  • Ánimo (USA) – an interior with a wavy ceiling and semicircular booths.

Why it is important for Ukraine

A Ukrainian restaurant’s entry into the top 10 of Dezeen:

  • increases the international visibility of Ukrainian design;
  • demonstrates Ukraine’s ability to create competitive global projects even during the war;
  • promotes local materials, traditions, and culture on a global scale.
