Ukrainians are switching to electric cars en masse: how the share of imports of “young” cars has increased
24 November 16:28
In October, Ukrainians were more active in purchasing imported used cars less than five years old. According to Ukravtoprom, 9,600 of them were purchased, accounting for 37% of all used cars that appeared on Ukrainian roads in the month, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
A sharp shift toward electric vehicles
The most noticeable change is the increase in the share of electric vehicles. They covered 57% of all purchased imported cars in this segment. For comparison, the results for traditional engines are much more modest:
- gasoline – 29%,
- hybrids – 9%,
- diesel – 4%,
- and 1% for cars with LPG.
Analysts attribute this trend to a combination of factors:
- preservation of tax benefits for electric cars,
- cheaper models on the global market,
- high fuel costs in Ukraine.
Demand leaders
The top 10 most popular cars under 5 years old are almost entirely dominated by electric vehicles. They were bought the most:
- Tesla Model Y – 942 units,
- Tesla Model 3 – 602,
- Kia Niro – 438,
- Nissan Rogue – 290,
- Hyundai Kona – 280.
The combination of a high share of Tesla and electric vehicles from Hyundai, Kia, and Volkswagen indicates a change in the structure of demand – Ukrainians are focusing on more modern and fuel-efficient cars.
The total vehicle fleet is growing rapidly
In total, more than 26.1 thousand used cars were imported in October, 60% more than last year and 12% more than in September. These figures demonstrate a steady recovery of the market after the fall caused by the war and economic restrictions.
