Ukrainians will receive new 20 hryvnia with updated design and patriotism: details

Starting August 21, 2025, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) will officially put into circulation modified 20-hryvnia banknotes. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to information from the national financial regulator.
The main difference between the new notes is the presence of the patriotic slogan “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!” in the upper right part of the back.
All other elements remain unchanged. Thus, the updated 20 hryvnia banknote has the following characteristics:
- The main picture on the front side is a portrait of Ivan Franko
- The main picture of the reverse side is the Lviv Opera House
- Size, mm – 69 x 130
- Date of printing – 2025
- Date of putting into circulation – 21.08.2025
New look – familiar protection
According to the regulator, all other design elements and security features remain identical to the 2018 design of the 20 hryvnia banknote. This means that citizens should not worry about the new security features: they remain unchanged.

The goal is to reinforce cash circulation
According to the NBU, the new banknotes will be handed over to banks and collection companies (CIT companies) for further issuance to customers, as well as to replace worn or damaged banknotes that are already in circulation.
The NBU emphasizes that there is no need to exchange old 20-hryvnia banknotes for new ones. All previous issues of this denomination remain legal tender and are accepted throughout Ukraine.
This step by the national financial regulator is part of a larger initiative to patriotically update the design of the national currency. In August 2024, on Independence Day, banknotes with the slogan “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!” in denominations: 500 and 1000 hryvnias went into circulation on August 8, 2024, and 50 hryvnias of the new design could be used from August 23, 2024.
The 100- and 200-hryvnia banknotes are planned to be redesigned in the following years as part of the planned issuance.

Patriotic design as a response to the present
According to the NBU, the introduction of patriotic elements in the design of the national currency is not only a symbolic gesture, but also a manifestation of respect for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and all those who defend the independence of the state.
It should be noted that the National Bank has already issued 20 hryvnia banknotes with party symbols: on February 23, 2023, the financial regulator put into circulation a commemorative banknote “Remember! We will not forgive!” with the following characteristics:
- The main design of the front side is the Ukrainian military installing the State Flag of Ukraine against the background of fragments of the map of Ukraine and flags of countries that support Ukraine
- The main design of the reverse side is hands tied behind their backs, which in August 2024, on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, the National Bank issued modified national currency banknotes, adding the slogan of modern Ukraine to their design: “GLORY TO UKRAINE! GLORY TO THE HEROES!”, which embodies the physical suffering and spiritual experiences of Ukrainians under occupation
- Size, mm – 80 x 165
- Date of printing – 2023
In addition to security elements for visual detection, the banknote had security elements that are detectable in ultraviolet and infrared rays and have magnetic properties.
An additional security element was the optically variable image of a composition of stylized fragments of a viburnum branch and an anti-tank hedgehog, which has a kinetic effect. When the angle of the banknote is changed, the image areas gradually change from golden to jade color.
In addition, in November 2021, the 2018 design of the 20-hryvnia banknote, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, was put into circulation.
