Ukrainians are switching to cash: NBU tells how many banknotes there are in the country
21 July 16:24
As of July 1, 2025, there are 859.9 billion hryvnias in cash in circulation in Ukraine. This was reported by the National Bank of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
This amount is UAH 37.5 billion more than at the beginning of the year. The increase was 4.6%.
In the first quarter, Ukrainians were actively depositing cash in banks, but since April, the demand for banknotes and coins has picked up sharply. The NBU explains this by the traditional seasonality – people use cash more often in summer.
What’s in Ukrainians’ wallets
There is a real “army” of money circulating in the country:
- 2.6 billion banknotes worth UAH 851.2 billion.
- 15 billion coins (excluding collectibles) worth UAH 8.5 billion.
On average, each Ukrainian has 63 banknotes and 189 coins.

The most popular banknotes and coins
According to the NBU, thefive hundred is the undisputed leader among banknotes, accounting for 27.3% of all banknotes in circulation. But the fifty has become a real “outsider” – only 4.4% of Ukrainians keep it in their wallets. At the same time, common sense suggests that it should be the other way around.
The situation with coins is interesting: most of the coins in circulation are 1 hryvnia, but tens are rare – only 2% of the total.
An unexpected fact: 50-kopiika coins are still popular! They account for 9.1% of all coins in circulation, as merchants actively use them for change.
In the first half of 2025, Ukrainians fell in love with large denominations:
- Thousand-hryvnia banknotes showed the largest increase, with their share growing by 2.2%.
- 10-hryvnia coins also became more popular (0.2%).
