In 2024, 1270 orphans and children deprived of parental care were adopted in Ukraine.
This was reported by the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“Ukrainian families adopted 1268 orphans. This is almost equal to the numbers before the full-scale invasion, when intercountry adoption was allowed, and children were adopted by both Ukrainians and foreigners,” the statement said.
It is noted that Ukrainians adopted the most children last year over the past five years.
For comparison:
- 2024 – 1270 children (of which 1268 were adopted by citizens of Ukraine, two children by foreigners);
- 2023 – 927 children (926 of them adopted by Ukrainian citizens, one child by foreigners);
- 2022 – 752 children (643 adopted by Ukrainian citizens and the rest by foreigners);
- 2021 – 1354 children (1082 adopted by Ukrainian citizens and the rest by foreigners);
- 2020 – 1239 children (992 adopted by Ukrainian citizens and the rest by foreigners).
The Ministry noted that during martial law, adoption by foreigners is allowed only in cases where the adoptive parent is a relative of the child or the adopted child is a sibling of a child who was adopted by the family earlier.
“In Ukraine, there are still children in need of a family in institutionalized care. That is why the development of adoption is one of the state’s priorities, just like the development of family-based forms of care. Figures show that over the past five years, Ukrainians adopted the most children last year,” says Oksana Zholnovych, Minister of Social Policy.
