Ukraine will be hit by a sharp cold snap and blizzards: when the temperature drops to -23

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate sharply in Ukraine this week. Forecasters warn of heavy snowfall, blizzards, ice and a significant drop in air temperature. In some regions, temperatures may reach -23°C at night. This was reported by the State Emergency Service, citing data from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

Weather on January 8-9: snow, blizzards and ice

According to weather forecasters, on January 8 and 9, a significant deterioration of weather conditions is expected in the western and northern regions, as well as in Vinnytsia and Cherkasy regions.

In particular

  • in the western regions, Vinnytsia and Zhytomyr, heavy snow is expected – from 10 to 25 cm, wind gusts of 15-18 m/s, blizzards; snow drifts will form on the roads;
  • in Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, heavy snow and sleet (up to 25 cm in some places), blizzards, snow accumulation, and ice cover on the roads are expected;
  • in the southern districts of Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, as well as in Sumy and Cherkasy regions , snow and rain are forecast, with ice formation possible in some places.

January 10-11: severe frosts down to -23°C

The most significant cold snap is expected on January 10-11. The air temperature will drop sharply across the country.

According to the forecast:

  • in the western and northern regions, in Vinnytsia and Cherkasy regions, the temperature will be -14…-20°C at night, sometimes up to -23°C, and -9…-15°C during the day;
  • in Kirovohrad and Poltava regions, at night, the temperature is expected to be -6…-12°C;
  • in the southern, eastern regions and Dnipropetrovska oblast, the temperature will range from -4 to 4°C.

Warning for drivers and pedestrians

The State Emergency Service urges citizens to be careful due to the difficult road situation, possible traffic jams, poor visibility and slippery surfaces.

Drivers are advised to refrain from long trips, and pedestrians are advised to be careful when walking on sidewalks.
