Ukrzaliznytsia has put an end to the dispute between passengers on the upper and lower berths

29 January 05:10

Ukrzaliznytsia has resolved a long-standing conflict between passengers traveling on the upper and lower berths in long-distance train carriages. The company has clearly defined who has the right to use the space under the lower bunk. The carrier published the relevant clarification on its page on the social network Threads, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Who owns the space under the lower bunk

As emphasized by Ukrzaliznytsia, the space for storing belongings under the lower bunk belongs exclusively to the passenger who purchased a ticket for that lower bunk.

Passengers traveling on the upper berths do not have the automatic right to use the space under the lower berth of another passenger without their consent.

“The space for storing belongings under the lower shelf belongs to the passenger who has a ticket for the lower seat. Passengers from the upper shelves do not have the automatic right to occupy the space under someone else’s lower shelf without the consent of the passenger below,” the company said.

Where to store belongings for passengers in upper berths

Ukrzaliznytsia advises passengers with upper berths to plan the placement of their hand luggage in advance. In particular, the company recommends:

  • store belongings on the upper luggage racks;
  • using the niches in the passenger compartment;
  • agree with the passenger on the lower shelf on the placement of luggage — only by mutual agreement.

The company emphasized that the space under the lower shelf can only be used with the permission of the passenger occupying that seat.

Why was an official clarification needed?

The issue of using the space under the lower shelves has been a source of conflict in train carriages for years. The carrier’s clear position should help:

  • avoid disputes between passengers;
  • make travel more comfortable;
  • establish clear rules for the use of luggage space.

Thus, Ukrzaliznytsia has effectively put an end to a long-standing debate by clearly defining the rights of passengers depending on the type of seat purchased.
