Ukrzaliznytsia has simplified the conditions for traveling with pets: what has changed

24 July 2025 04:02

Ukrzaliznytsia has initiated changes to the current rules to provide more convenient travel conditions for passengers with animals. This was reported in the company’s Telegram channel, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“Last year, Ukrzaliznytsia initiated changes to the rules for the transportation of animals to make traveling with pets more comfortable. Before submitting this particular version of the rules for consideration, the railroaders held consultations with UAnimals, experts from the Ministry of Development and transport experts from partner countries,” the message says.

What has changed?

Large dogs (above 45 cm at the withers)

Now they can travel in all types of cars if the following conditions are met:

  • In Intercity trains – allowed if all seats in the row where the passenger is sitting are purchased. The dog must be on the floor – under or near the seat.
  • In sleeping cars of the “Lux” class and international RIC cars – as before, you need to buy all the seats in the compartment.
  • Military service dogs can travel free of charge, regardless of the type of carriage or size, but must be muzzled and on a leash.

Small animals (cats, small dogs up to 45 cm)

  • They can stay outside the carrier in the compartment (for natural sleep and activity) if all seats are purchased.
  • The carrier does not have to be rigid – a carrier bag, backpack or container with a waterproof bottom will do.

Important to remember

In any case, passengers must:

  • Have veterinary documents, a ticket for the animal, a leash and a muzzle (for large dogs);
  • Take care of the comfort of the animal and other passengers.

In case of passenger discomfort due to the proximity to an animal, you can contact a conductor or steward who will help you find another comfortable seat.

“These changes are another step towards the European level of service and respect for animal rights. Travel with your pets without stress!” emphasized Ukrzaliznytsia.
