Ukraine voiced three main conditions during the negotiations with Russia in Istanbul on July 23. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to a briefing by the head of the Ukrainian delegation, Rustem Umerov.
During the talks, Ukraine clearly outlined three main requirements that are key to further advancing the peace process.
The main priorities of the Ukrainian side:
- A completeand unconditional ceasefire, including a complete cessation of missile and other attacks on civilian objects and critical infrastructure.
- Organize a meeting at the highest level between President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President of Russia Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian side proposes to hold this meeting with the participation of international partners, in particular, US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It is expected that such a meeting could take place by the end of August, given the timeframe proposed by international allies.
- Continuation of the humanitarian track. This refers to the return of all Ukrainian prisoners, both military and civilian, including children, who were illegally taken to Russia. According to Umerov, the only obstacle on this path is the absence of a political decision in the Kremlin that would allow for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Rustem Umerov emphasized the importance of direct negotiations between the leaders of the countries.
“A meeting of leaders can become a tool that will help unblock political and security issues. Ukraine, as he noted, is ready for this.”
He also thanked international partners for supporting the peaceful dialogue initiative, particularly noting Turkey’s efforts.
“We are grateful to the partners who support the efforts for peace – in particular, to Turkey for its active role in creating a platform for dialogue. Peace is possible. But for this to happen, Moscow must change its approach: from ultimatums to responsibility, from war to solutions,” Umerov concluded.
