The government is abandoning air conditioning
7 June 2024 18:10The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has decided to reduce electricity consumption for all public authorities. First of all, it was decided to abandon air conditioning. This was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during a government meeting, reports [Kommersant]
“Ministries, central executive authorities, regional state administrations should refuse to use air conditioners, outdoor lighting of buildings and the surrounding area,” he said,
– shmyhal said.
He also recommended similar measures for law enforcement agencies, the judiciary and other state institutions. The Prime Minister advised local authorities to limit street lighting.
In addition, the Prime Minister also called on businesses to reduce the use of air conditioning and other energy-intensive equipment that is not critical to production.
An exception was made for hospitals and specialised businesses.
“The exception is that the use of air conditioners in hospitals and enterprises where air conditioning is part of the production process will not be restricted,”
– shmyhal clarified.
As it turned out, air conditioners have become a real challenge for the power grid. According to YASNO CEO Serhiy Kovalenko, air conditioners can increase energy consumption by a third on a hot day.
