Inside Security: Radiation leak detected in Iran’s Natanz amid Israeli attacks

13 June 2025 20:36

A radiation leak has occurred at a nuclear facility in the Iranian city of Natanz, but its consequences are currently localized. This was reported by the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, according to Clash Report and Tehran Times, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to Iranian officials, radiation contamination was detected inside the facility, and external monitoring did not show any excess of standards. Representatives of the organization assure that “there is no cause for concern,” although cleanup continues inside the facility, and the extent of the damage is still being determined.

Meanwhile, Reuters quotes an Israeli military official as saying that the Natanz facility, Iran’s main nuclear enrichment center, “has suffered significant damage.”

What preceded it

On the night of June 13, Israel struck a number of Iranian facilities, including nuclear and military ones. This was a response to escalating tensions between the two countries.

After the strike, former U.S. President Donald Trump called on Iran to conclude a new deal “before it’s too late,” calling Israel’s actions “very successful.”

In response, Israel announced the closure of its diplomatic missions around the world, probably for security reasons.

At the same time, Iran initiated an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to be held on June 13. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his intention to hold talks with US President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Implications for Nuclear Infrastructure and Localization of Radiation Risk
Although Iranian authorities have detected a radiation incident at the Natanz nuclear facility, no contamination has been detected outside the facility and the risk is low. At the same time, the Israeli side assesses the strikes as significant for Iran’s nuclear program.

International Reaction and Economic Consequences
The UN urgently convenes a meeting of the Security Council at Iran’s initiative.

The US denies direct involvement in the military operation, but welcomes Israel’s actions and calls on Iran to negotiate.

On world markets, oil prices rose by 6-14%, while US and European stock indices fell.

Prospects for the conflict
Israel announces preparations for prolonged military actions against Iran’s nuclear potential. Iran warns of further strikes, including retaliation through its proxies (such as Hezbollah).
The international community is calling on the parties to exercise restraint, but there is a real risk of escalation into a broader regional conflict.
