UEFA is considering the possibility of Russia’s return to European football tournaments.

The Independent writes about this, citing its own sources, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Thus, some influential people in European football are in favor of lifting Russia’s suspension, as they consider it “groundless.” Some UEFA officials also believe that Russia should not have been suspended from the competition at all.

Therefore, according to the Independent, against the backdrop of a possible truce in the Russian-Ukrainian war, a plan is being developed to return Russian teams to international competitions. The process has already involved the International Olympic Committee, which had previously called for Russian and Belarusian athletes to be allowed to participate in the Winter Olympics.

According to the Independent, FIFA and UEFA suspended Russia from international competitions not for moral reasons after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but because at least 12 European associations refused to play with them, and the number was expected to rise to 18.

One of these countries was Poland, which was supposed to play Russia in the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs in Qatar, which caused FIFA to face a crisis.

The issue of Russia’s possible return to the international football arena is scheduled to be considered at the UEFA Congress to be held next week in Belgrade.
