The entrance to the temporarily occupied Avdiivka, Donetsk region, has been closed due to the cholera epidemic. This was announced by the head of the Avdiivka city military administration Vitaliy Barabash, reports [Kommersant]

Barabash said that the occupiers bring in food in special suits and gas masks. Then they quickly leave.

“They say that there is a strong stench of dead bodies in the city. And no one is taking anything apart. That’s probably why this cholera epidemic happened. There is an epidemiological catastrophe there,” Barabash said.

Doctor Taras Zhyravetsky in an exclusive commentary for [Kommersant] notes that the occupiers can hide the fact of cholera because it is a local problem and the epidemic is not yet all-Ukrainian or all-Russian. If this is not supported in the media, people will not know about this fact at all, Zhyravetskyi adds.

“Can cholera spread to the whole of Ukraine? I think not. And Ukraine is in control of this situation. Moreover, there have been no reports of a cholera pandemic,” Zhyravetskyi said.

The doctor explained that where there is no water, where there is imported water, people try to take it from unknown sources.

“If there is no centralised water, there is a chance of contracting cholera or any other intestinal infection and getting poisoned. We, as doctors, cannot do anything to help, but we warn you that if you collect water from somewhere, it is advisable to at least boil it,” advises Zhyravetskyi.

It should be noted that the cholera epidemic in the occupying Russian army in Ukraine has been raging for a long time. In particular, in June 2024, BILD open data analyst Julian Röpke wrote that cases of typhoid and cholera due to the lack of drinking water were recorded among the Russian military in the Kherson sector. There are reports of deaths and that the number of cases is growing. One soldier is given 18 litres of water for 14 days, which is not enough. As a result, the soldiers drink dirty water from rivers and wells, filtering it through a napkin, Röpke said.

Russian publics also write about the epidemic. The Telegram channel “Two Majors” writes that in the Kherson region “there are already fatalities from typhoid and cholera, and the number of cases is growing.”
