There is a deficit in the power grid: Ukraine buys electricity abroad for the second day around the clock

Ukraine’s power system is experiencing a shortage of electricity, so Ukrenergo has been attracting emergency assistance from Europe for the second day in a row. This was reported by the press service of Ukrenergo, Komersant ukrainskyi https://www.komersant.info/ reports.

Due to damage caused by Russian strikes, power plants cannot generate enough electricity to cover all consumer needs. Therefore, it has to be drawn from the integrated power system.

“During the day, from Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Moldova. The total volume is 9,298 MWh, with a maximum capacity of up to 1,592 MW in some hours. From 1 December, the technical possibility of importing electricity from Europe to Ukraine and Moldova is 1,700 MW per hour,”

– the statement said.

Currently, 383 settlements in Ukraine are without electricity. In Kryvyi Rih, consumption restrictions for industrial consumers remain in place around the clock. In Kharkiv region, about 209,000 household consumers are without power.

From 18:00 to 22:00, power curtailment schedules for business and industry will be applied across the country. These measures will not affect critical infrastructure and defence companies.

Emergency repair works continue at thermal power plants following the massive missile attack on 11 April. Nuclear power plants are undergoing a scheduled repair campaign.

Power companies are urging people to conserve electricity, especially during the evening peak hours of 20:30 to 21:30.

According to President Zelenskyy, Russia has destroyed almost all of Ukraine’s thermal power generation. DTEK has damaged 80% of its facilities.
