Iran urgently appointed a new leader: who became it

1 March 13:08

Iran has appointed a temporary supreme leader following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on Tehran.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Iranian agency ISNA.

Temporary leadership and transition period

High-ranking cleric Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has become Iran’s temporary supreme leader. According to the country’s constitution, he has joined a temporary leadership council that will perform the duties of head of state until a successor is elected.

The council also includes President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei. This body will jointly govern the country during the transition of power.

Changes in the IRGC leadership

The massive strikes also led to the elimination of the top leadership of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Commander-in-Chief General Mohammad Pakpour is reported to have been killed.

Ahmad Vahidi has been appointed as the new head of the IRGC. It should be noted that the Corps is Iran’s most influential institution, controlling not only military but also political and economic processes, acting separately from the regular armed forces.

Strikes on Iran

On February 28, a joint US-Israeli operation against the Iranian regime began.

US President Donald Trump announced that the goal of the campaign was to completely neutralize the threats from Tehran. As a result of a series of precision strikes, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the Minister of Defense, and the Chief of Staff were eliminated.

Iran responded by firing on Israeli territory and US military facilities in Bahrain, Kuwait, and other neighboring countries.
