Twenty-one people died when two high-speed trains derailed in Spain. Another 100 people were injured, 30 of them seriously. An Iryo train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and veered onto a neighboring track, where it collided with an oncoming train bound for Huelva. The cause of the accident is still unknown. According to Spanish media reports, there were a total of 400 people on the two trains.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he is closely monitoring the situation. The Spanish royal family also expressed their condolences.
According to Reuters, rescuers are still working at the scene of the tragedy, trying to find passengers who survived in the trains. In comments to local television, they said that they are not yet able to estimate how many people survived from the carriages that bore the brunt of the collision.
According to the mayor of Adamuz, where the high-speed trains derailed, he was one of the first to arrive at the scene. “I saw a passenger who was mangled beyond recognition,” the official told El Pais newspaper.
