The highest volcano in Europe, Mount Etna, has erupted on the Italian island of Sicily. A strong lava flow has started in the Voragine crater. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to The Warchers.

Thus, a new eruption of Mount Etna began on 14 August in the Voragine crater and soon escalated into an intense lava flow.

As a result, the aviation security colour code was raised from orange to red. In addition to lava, the volcano spewed a thick column of ash, which then settled on many settlements.

The height of the lava fountain at its peak reportedly reached about 9.5 km above sea level.

According to Euronews, Catania International Airport remains closed with all arrivals and departures as Mount Etna spewed smoke into the air at night due to an eruption. Volcanic ash increases visibility for pilots.

It should be noted that on 4 August, the volcano Mount Etna erupted on the island of Sicily, which made air traffic to the island difficult, and some flights were cancelled or diverted to other airports.

What is known about Mount Etna

Mount Etna is one of the most famous and active volcanoes in the world, located on the east coast of the island of Sicily in Italy. It is the highest active volcano in Europe and covers an area of over 1,190 square kilometres.

The earliest recorded eruption dates back to 1500 B.C. The volcano continues to erupt to this day, often causing local earthquakes and lava flows. One of the largest eruptions occurred in 1669, when lava reached the city of Catania.

In 2013, Etna was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
