The Ukrainian language will continue to be promoted in Ivano-Frankivsk through a language protection programme in memory of Iryna Farion. This was announced by the mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk Ruslan Martsinkiv in a video message, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

According to him, in the near future, language inspectors will start working in the city on a voluntary basis.

“I had a visit from the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremin. We talked a lot about the promotion of the Ukrainian language, social advertising and other measures that the city plans to take to popularise the Ukrainian language. We will introduce a public initiative in Frankivsk – language inspectors,” said Martsinkiv.

The details of this initiative will be announced later. According to the mayor, the main reason for the introduction of language inspectors is the increase in the number of Russian speakers in Ivano-Frankivsk.

As a reminder, on 16 July, Article 25 of the Law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language” came into force .

This article regulates the use of the state language by local print media.

In total, since July 2019, there have been seven waves of gradual implementation of the law’s language provisions. Ukrainian has become mandatory in most areas: advertising, education, culture, services, transport, healthcare, book publishing and distribution, etc.

Despite this, scandals erupt almost every month over the use of Russian in Ukraine: for example, recently a woman was kicked out of a conference in Odesa for asking to speak Ukrainian.
