UN adopts resolution on the war in Gaza

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The document was voted in favor by 149 countries out of 193, while the United States, Israel, and 10 other countries opposed it and 19 abstained. This is stated on the website of the General Assembly, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The resolution also calls for the release of hostages held by Hamas, the return of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

The text condemns the use of starvation as a method of war and the blocking of humanitarian aid.

Israel’s representative to the UN, Danny Danon, called the text of the resolution a “bloody slander” and said that its adoption without the condition of the hostages’ release demonstrates that the abduction of civilians works as a strategy.

In her turn, acting US Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea said that the resolution “does not release hostages, does not improve the situation for civilians in Gaza, and does not bring a truce closer,” calling it a demonstrative gesture that undermines the UN’s authority.

The decision was made during an emergency session of the General Assembly after the United States vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council last week, arguing that the document would harm the peace process.
