In the morning of December 12, “one of the industrial facilities” caught fire in the city of Orsk, Orenburg region, the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported. The fire was extinguished for almost an hour. It involved 46 people and 17 pieces of equipment, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing Russian propaganda media.
“No one was killed or injured. The fire did not affect the technological process,” the rescue service said.
At the same time, local residents observed a large column of black smoke in the area of the mechanical plant, and also smelled a chemical odor in the streets. According to eyewitnesses’ photos and videos, a large fire broke out on the territory of the Mechanical Plant JSC, which is part of the Rostec state corporation. The company produces more than 50% of artillery shells in Russia. The plant also produces components for multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS).
The cause of the fire at the plant has not been officially announced. The mayor of Orsk, Artem Vorobyov, did not comment on the fire. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, last night, regular air defense systems “destroyed” 90 Ukrainian aircraft-type drones. However, no drones were spotted over the Orenburg region.
In November, drones attacked the largest oil refinery in the region, Orsknefteorgsintez, owned by Forteinvest. After that, the company completely stopped processing crude oil for a week. The local authorities also did not provide any details about the incident, merely mentioning that “one of the industrial facilities in the region was damaged.”
The day before, on December 11, Ukrainian drones attacked two chemical plants in the Novgorod and Smolensk regions. In particular, Acron, a mineral fertilizer producer, was hit in Veliky Novgorod, and Dorogobuzh in Smolensk Oblast. Fires broke out at both facilities.
