While Energoatom is connecting a new power unit, Ukrenergo is still increasing power restrictions

Today, 17 July, in the morning, two energy companies issued press releases with radically different forecasts for the Ukrainian power grid. While Energoatom has ahead of schedule connected another 1000 MW power unit to the Ukrainian grid after scheduled repairs, Ukrenergo has warned of an increase in electricity restrictions for the population, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
Thus, Energoatom reported:
“Thanks to the prompt actions of Ukrainian nuclear scientists, the return of the power unit to normal operation will significantly strengthen the domestic power grid”
Instead, Ukrenergo said that “due to the heat, it will increase electricity restrictions until 22:00”.
“In Ukraine, due to the increase in consumption caused by the heat, four rounds of blackouts will take effect from 11:00 to 22:00. From 22:00 to 24:00, three stages will be in effect,”
– the company said in a statement.
So, it is currently unknown whether Ukrainians can expect the situation with electricity to improve.
The company has not yet explained why the connection of the thousandth power unit to the country’s grid does not affect Ukrenergo’s actions.
As a reminder, amid the heatwave and an increase in the number and duration of power outages, the statistics of food poisoning and tragic deaths in water bodies in Ukraine have increased significantly.
The situation in the Ukrainian energy sector
on 29 March 2024, Russia resumed its attacks on the Ukrainian energy sector, carrying out the most massive shelling in the entire period of the full-scale war. In particular, DniproHES and other Ukrainian energy facilities were hit. Since then, Russia has been regularly shelling Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
For example, the Russians destroyed the Trypillia and Zmiiv thermal power plants, causing Centrenergo to lose 100% of its generation. Also, 5 of DTEK’s 6 thermal power plants were severely damaged.
After that, power outages began again in Ukraine, Ukrenergo introduced blackout schedules and the government raised electricity tariffs by 60% at once.
At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to build two new units at the Khmelnytsky N PP and has already received the approval of the relevant parliamentary committee. The Razumkov Centre has criticised these plans, but some experts believe that only traitors or scoundrels are against the construction of nuclear power plants today.
