Ukraine has partially canceled power outages: where there will be no blackouts

20 February 04:21

In Ukraine, hourly power outages will continue on February 20, but some regions will be able to avoid restrictions. Despite the difficult situation in the power system due to Russian attacks, energy companies are gradually stabilizing the power supply, and in some regions, the lights will not be turned off. This was reported by NEC Ukrenergo, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Where the lights will not be turned off on February 20

According to official information from the regional power companies, no hourly power cuts are planned for the population in two regions of Ukraine on Thursday, February 20.

The following regions will operate without power outages:

  • Zakarpattia region
  • Volyn region

Energy companies report that these regions currently have sufficient electricity supplies, which allows them to avoid restrictions.

In most regions, power outage schedules remain in place

At the same time, in most regions of Ukraine, hourly power outage schedules for the population and power restrictions for businesses will continue to be in effect throughout the day.

In particular, the schedules apply in the following regions:

  • Cherkasy region
  • Chernihiv region
  • Sumy region
  • Kharkiv region
  • Zaporizhzhia region
  • Dnipropetrovsk region
  • Kirovohrad region
  • and other regions of Ukraine

The time and duration of power cuts will depend on the situation in a particular region and will be determined by local power companies.

Why power cuts continue in Ukraine

The main reason for the power outage schedules remains the consequences of Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Due to damage to power plants and networks, energy companies are forced to balance the system to avoid emergency blackouts and a complete collapse of the power grid.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stated that all of the country’s large power plants have been damaged as a result of attacks by Russian troops.

Despite this, the power system continues to operate, and energy companies are restoring the damaged infrastructure on a daily basis.

The situation can change every hour

Ukrenergo emphasizes that the situation in the power grid remains dynamic.

Energy workers urge Ukrainians to

  • to follow the announcements of local power companies;
  • check the power outage schedules for their address;
  • use electricity rationally.

When the power situation may improve

According to experts’ forecasts, the power grid could stabilize as early as spring 2026.

The situation is expected to improve due to:

  • the end of the heating season;
  • a reduction in the load on the grid;
  • the restoration of damaged infrastructure;
  • increased electricity generation.

However, the risk of blackouts will remain, especially in the event of new attacks on energy facilities.
