A pilot project to introduce the specialization of judges in family and children’s affairs has been launched in Ukraine. This was reported by the Supreme Court of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The introduction of such an element of child-friendly justice in Ukraine as the specialization of judges in family and children’s cases is due to our state’s obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the need to further implement international standards, recommendations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, and the priorities of the Council of Europe and the European Union to ensure the rights and best interests of the child.
The objectives of the pilot are
– adapting court proceedings to the needs of the child and focusing on his or her best interests;
– providing training for professionals working with children in the justice system;
– introducing specialization of judges in family and children’s cases;
– improving access to justice by involving judges with relevant sectoral specialization in family and children’s cases;
– implementing a systematic approach and effective interagency cooperation in protecting the rights of children who have come under the jurisdiction of the court;
– promoting high-quality and prompt consideration of court cases on family and children’s issues by judges with in-depth knowledge and skills in considering this category of cases;
– formation of a qualitatively new child-friendly justice system.
Reportedly, a seminar was held in Kyiv on the initiative of the Civil Court of Cassation as part of the Supreme Court and the Interagency Coordination Council on Juvenile Justice with the support of the UNICEF Office in Ukraine and the NGO “VGC Volunteer” to launch a pilot project to introduce the specialization of judges in family and children’s issues.
