Ukraine wants to ban disposable forks and plastic food packaging. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" reportsciting the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

The ministry noted that, according to expert estimates, only 10-15% of single-use plastic is recycled globally each year. At the same time, 130 million tonnes of single-use plastic were discarded globally in 2019. In Australia, 59 kilograms of such waste was generated per person, 53 kg in the United States, 37 kg in Japan, 34 kg in Canada, and 23 kg in Italy.

Therefore, in 2019, the European Union began to systematically address this problem and approved Directive 2019/904 on the reduction of the impact of certain plastic products on the environment.

Following the European path, Ukraine is also implementing the best European practices in the fight for a clean environment. A draft law is currently being developed to implement Directive 2019/904 and gradually limit the circulation of single-use plastic products in Ukraine. In particular, it is planned to ban the production, importation, putting into circulation and distribution of certain plastic goods.

What plastic products will be banned in Ukraine

  • stirrers and straws for drinks;
