A new wave of coronavirus may begin in Ukraine in the next two months. This was stated by infectious disease doctor Larysa Moroz on the Kyiv24 TV channel, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“Unfortunately, the coronavirus infection is already becoming a seasonal disease. If we go by last year’s plan, October – early November is the period when the incidence of COVID-19 is growing. And we expect a powerful wave of flu again,” she said.

New strains

Currently, two new sub-variants of the Omicron strain are circulating in Ukraine – NB.1.8.1 (Nimbus ) and XFG (Stratus). According to the Ministry of Health, there is no evidence that they cause a more severe course of the disease.

Situation in the Zhytomyr region

So far, the number of cases is even decreasing in some areas. In Zhytomyr region, 33.3% fewer coronavirus cases were registered last week than before. Hospitalizations also decreased by 17.5%.
However, the majority of patients are adults aged 30-64. At the same time, the number of SARS cases among children has increased sharply – by 15.7%. Schoolchildren aged 5-14 are the most sick, and in all districts of the region.

What the Ministry of Health says

The Ministry of Health urges Ukrainians to follow basic preventive measures and get vaccinated, especially people at risk. They emphasize that although the new strains of Omicron do not yet appear to be more aggressive, even a milder course can lead to complications for the elderly and patients with chronic diseases.

Context

Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, Ukraine has experienced several large waves of coronavirus, with the worst of them occurring in the fall and winter. Last year, the incidence peaked in October and November.

Doctors expect a similar scenario to repeat itself this year, along with a seasonal increase in flu cases.
