First death from new COVID-19 Stratus variant confirmed in Ukraine

In Lviv, a man who fell ill with the Stratus coronavirus died in intensive care. This was announced by the medical director of the institution, Andriy Orfin, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports citing Lviv.Media.
Orfin confirmed that a 65-year-old man died of coronavirus in the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital. The patient had been in intensive care for several days. It is noteworthy that this is the first death due to coronavirus since the beginning of 2025.
“Severe pneumonia was confirmed by X-rays and pathology as well. The man had a number of comorbidities that complicated the course of the disease,” the doctor said.
He also added that the man was not vaccinated and lived in one of the districts of the region. The doctor added that adults and children with coronavirus continue to be admitted to the medical facility amid the outbreak of new Nimbus and Stratus sub-variants.
As of August 18, there were 50 children and 24 adults in the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital. Children were not vaccinated, and the percentage of adults was also minimal.
As a reminder, doctors have confirmed 38 cases of Stratus in Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovs’k, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Poltava, Chernihiv regions and in Kyiv.
