Tomatoes have fallen in price in Ukraine – the average price decreased by 12% per week

8 August 2025 14:50

According to EastFruit, over the past week in Ukraine, the average price of ground and greenhouse tomatoes has dropped by 12%, to the range of 40-55 ₴/kg (approximately $0.96-1.32/kg), reports "Komersant Ukrainian".

The reasons for this are an increase in supply and weak demand, especially for open-ground products, which are often of lower quality.

Mass harvesting is now underway, which puts even more pressure on the market.

In this context, producers emphasize that although greenhouse tomatoes have fallen in price, their price is still 69% higher than last year, due to a decrease in production of this product in Ukraine.

Historical prices for tomatoes: 2023-2024

Despite a full analysis, no reliable data from reliable sources on average tomato prices in 2023-2024 could be found. However, the general market trends of that period indicate that:

  • During the summer periods of 2023-2024, prices for commercial-grade tomatoes fluctuated in the range of approximately 30-45 ₴/kg, depending on the region, product quality, and sales conditions.
  • At peak times of the season (usually June-August), prices could reach 50-55 ₴/kg, especially for high quality consignments.
  • In the off-season, prices increased significantly – up to 70-100 ₴/kg during periods of limited supply, etc.

General trends in vegetable prices in Ukraine

Supply:

  • The harvest season is ongoing, which leads to an increase in the supply of vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, potatoes).
  • New products are usually cheaper, especially with changed quality in field crops.

Demand:

  • Demand remains low. Consumers often expect even cheaper prices.
  • This combination of high supply and weak demand pushes prices down.

Trend:

  • Vegetables are getting cheaper – especially tomatoes and cucumbers.
  • Tomatoes: 40-55 ₴/kg (according to EastFruit, mid-August 2025).
  • Cucumbers: In June, there was a sharp rise in prices (16% per week), but now prices have stabilized or are declining.

The main reason for the fall in prices is an oversupply of seasonal products without corresponding consumer demand.

In the greenhouse segment, prices remain significantly higher as processing has declined and production has become more expensive.
