Onion prices have plummeted in Ukraine: what are the reasons?

25 March 10:48

Another wave of falling wholesale prices for onions began in Ukraine as early as the middle of last week, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

Many farmers had expected prices for this vegetable to start rising as early as the beginning of spring, as a significant volume of substandard produce would disappear from the market. However, prices in this segment continue to fall, while the supply of onions on the market remains more than sufficient.

Today, Ukrainian producers are quoting prices for onions in the range of 3–8 UAH/kg ($0.07–0.18/kg), which is on average 19% cheaper than at the start of the previous workweek. Farmers complain that they are forced to lower prices, as the bulk of the market supply continues to consist of medium- and low-quality vegetables. This situation stems from the fact that with the arrival of warm weather, farms began actively selling off onions from storage, as product quality is rapidly deteriorating. At the same time, trading activity in the segment remains quite low, which also puts downward pressure on prices.

It is worth noting that currently, onions in Ukraine are being sold on average 49% cheaper than during the same period last year.
