Christmas tree sales season has started in Ukraine: how many trees have already been sold

9 December 18:07

The state enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” reports an active start to the New Year’s sales season: since the end of November, more than 17,000 Christmas trees worth UAH 3.5 million have been sold, with an average price of about UAH 202 per tree. The company estimates that demand will grow in the coming weeks, [Komersant] reports.

Where people buy the most

The highest sales volumes were recorded in branches:

  • Central Forest Office – 6.9 thousand trees
  • Northern Forest Office – 3.7 thousand trees
  • Polissia Forestry Office – 3.4 thousand.

The company predicts that this year’s sales could reach 140 thousand Christmas trees, a figure close to last year’s.

Prices: almost unchanged, but vary by region

According to the Forests of Ukraine, the cost of Christmas trees has not increased much. Average prices are:

  • 210-250 UAH for a pine tree
  • 240-280 UAH for a spruce or fir

The cheapest trees are sold in regions with high forest cover. In Volyn, a 1.5-meter pine tree costs 180 UAH, in Sumy and Chernihiv regions – 170 UAH.
Prices are traditionally higher near large cities and in the sparsely forested regions of the East and South.

Some forestries also offer Christmas trees in containers that can be planted after the holidays. The price starts at 500 UAH depending on the size.

Where to buy

Sales are organized at more than 300 trading platforms – from forestries to city fairs. You can buy a Christmas tree

  • directly at the point of sale;
  • by pre-ordering by phone, followed by pickup and payment through a terminal, bank or online banking.

What the season means for forestry

The sale of Christmas trees has traditionally been one of the most significant seasonal sources of income for forestry. This year, the stability of prices and demand may help to partially offset the costs of the industry, which is operating in a time of war and rising logistics costs.

The company emphasizes that the trees sold are of legal origin, and control over harvesting has been tightened after several high-profile cases of poaching in previous years.
