The most earthquake-prone zones of Ukraine – where the risk of aftershocks is greatest
There are several seismically active regions in Ukraine. The most dangerous is the Vrancea zone in Romania, where most of the tremors felt on Ukrainian territory come from. This was stated by Dmytro Hryn, a leading researcher at the Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
According to him, the waves from Vranca reach Kyiv in a few minutes, and such earthquakes can cause significant vibrations even in the capital, as it was in 1977.
Another danger zone is Crimea and the Black Sea. In 1927, a powerful earthquake occurred there, causing casualties. Almost a hundred years have passed since then, which is a typical interval between strong tremors in this zone. In the event of a 7-8-point earthquake, the Kerch bridge illegally built by the occupiers, according to Hryn, will not withstand, as it was built in a zone of tectonic faults and mud volcanoes.
The Carpathians also belong to the seismically active regions where surface earthquakes occur, which are well felt by local residents but do not spread over long distances.
Other centers of activity are located in Poltava region and near Kryvyi Rih, where tremors of up to 4-4.5 points are recorded.
