In Ukraine, table beets have risen in price by 50% over the year. And this is not the only record-breaking vegetable

The majority of Ukrainian farmers do not agree to sell table beets for less than 17-22 UAH/kg, which is on average 10% more expensive than a week earlier. This is reported by analysts of the EastFruit project, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs.

The reason for such a sharp rise in price was the shortage of table beets on the market. It has become a very difficult task for wholesale companies to find sufficient volumes of this high-quality root crop. As a result, the demand for this product today prevails over the supply, which allows producers to set higher prices for table beets.

EastFruit experts point out that today beetroot in Ukraine is already 51% more expensive on average than a year earlier. At the same time, most producers intend to raise prices for these root crops again next week.

Cucumber sellers are also trying to keep up

Greenhouse vegetable producers in Ukraine have managed to raise prices for cucumbers for the second week in a row. According to analysts of the EastFruit project, retail chains and large wholesale companies showed particular interest in purchases. In addition, the supply of imported cucumbers has decreased significantly, which also allowed representatives of Ukrainian greenhouse plants to raise prices for their products.

As a result, at the end of last week, cucumbers from local greenhouses went on sale at 95-140 UAH/kg ($2.29-3.37/kg), depending on the quality and volume of batches, which is on average 12% more expensive than at the end of the previous working week.

Experts note that despite another rise in price, cucumbers in Ukraine are on sale on average 10% cheaper than in the same period last year.

But these are not the only record-breaking vegetables

According to the updated product monitoring of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, in March 2025, the largest price increase in the grocery segment was recorded in the vegetable category.

Tomatoes became the leader in price increase – plus 39% for the month. This is due to low volumes of domestic production and predominant imports from Turkey, which have recently decreased slightly.

Carrots also rose significantly in price, adding 30% to the retail price over the month. Its price increased due to high import dependence and seasonal shortages of domestic products.

The borsch index, calculated by experts from the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, also confirmed the rise in price of vegetables:

– cabbage rose in price by 71% over the year, while falling by 1% in a month;

– beets increased in price by 51% over the year, and by 13% over the month;

– potatoes rose in price by 26% over the year, but fell by 2% over the month;

– onions fell in price by 1% over the year and rose by 5% over the month;

– carrots gained 271% over the year and 9.8% over the month.

In fact, carrots can be considered the record-breaking vegetable at the end of the year.

According to the experts of the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club, we should not expect a decline in vegetable prices until May. Domestic supply from Ukrainian producers will start appearing only at the end of April. As for the price of potatoes, it continues to depend on imports.
