Cucumber prices are skyrocketing in Ukraine: what’s happening in the market

21 March 12:09

This week in Ukraine, the greenhouse cucumber segment is seeing a trend toward rising prices, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

The rise in cucumber prices is driven by stable demand amid fairly limited supply. Over the past week, harvest volumes at local greenhouse farms have dropped significantly, while trading activity in this segment has continued to grow.

Currently, Ukrainian greenhouse complexes are shipping cucumbers at 135–175 UAH/kg($3.07–3.98/kg), which is on average 10% more expensive than at the end of last week. According to producers, the price increase is driven by several factors. First and foremost, a significant reduction in supply, as cucumber yields in local greenhouses have dropped sharply. As a reminder, since the beginning of this week, Ukraine has experienced a significant drop in temperatures and predominantly cloudy weather, which has led to lower yields.

At the same time, cucumber supplies from Turkey have dropped to a minimum due to seasonal factors, which also allows local producers to raise prices amid strong demand.

It is worth noting that as of the last ten days of March this year, the cost of greenhouse cucumbers on the domestic market was on average 34% higher than during the same period last season. At the same time, market participants predict that in the near future, this product may begin to fall in price again under pressure from growing supply from local greenhouse complexes.
