Strategic roads in Ukraine to undergo urgent repairs: what is known

The Ukrainian government has begun preparations for large-scale repairs to strategically important highways. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has instructed the relevant authorities to urgently ensure readiness for the start of work, which is critical for defense, logistics, and the functioning of frontline communities.
The head of government announced this during the coordination of preparations for the new road season, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
Repairs will begin with strategic routes for defense and logistics
According to Yulia Svyrydenko, priority will be given to roads that play a key role in ensuring the country’s defense capability and the stable operation of critical infrastructure.
This primarily concerns routes that:
- are used for military logistics;
- ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid;
- connect frontline communities;
- guarantee the functioning of hospitals, energy facilities, and enterprises.
These roads will be repaired first after the end of the winter period.
Svyrydenko instructed to urgently prepare for the start of repairs
The relevant instructions were received by Deputy Prime Minister for Recovery Oleksiy Kuleba and the State Agency for Recovery.
They have been given the following key tasks:
- to ensure full readiness for the start of repair work;
- prepare equipment, materials, and contractors;
- to begin repairs immediately after weather conditions improve;
- focus on strategically important routes.
The government emphasizes that work must start without delay as soon as the weather permits.

The budget already includes funds for road repairs in 2026
The Prime Minister announced that funding for road repairs has already been included in the state budget for 2026.
At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers is working to attract additional resources to expand the scale of road infrastructure restoration.
This includes:
- international financial assistance;
- support from partners;
- additional state restoration programs.
This will allow for the repair of more roads than originally planned.
Road repairs are crucial for the economy and defense
In wartime, the quality of roads is critical for:
- the rapid movement of military equipment;
- evacuating the population;
- the delivery of goods and humanitarian aid;
- stable economic activity.
The restoration of road infrastructure is one of the priorities of Ukraine’s state reconstruction policy.
When will the repair work begin?
According to government officials, the active phase of repairs will start in the spring of 2026, immediately after weather conditions improve.
The preparatory stage is currently underway to ensure that work can begin as quickly as possible and no time is lost.
