Ukraine tests new air raid warning system

A new alarm notification system was tested in Cherkasy region on the night of December 10. This was announced the day before by the head of the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, Ihor Taburets, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to him, all algorithms were previously worked out with all relevant services and the military.

“Given the number and duration of air raids in our region and for the smooth operation of enterprises, institutions, and organizations,” the official explained the purpose of implementing such a pilot project in the region.

He also spoke about changes in the alert system.

– In case of danger from enemy UAVs, there will be a differentiation by district. That is, the “Air Alert” signal will be received by a certain area of the region where the target is detected and whether there is a potential threat, in particular from air defense systems.

– In the case of a missile threat, everything will remain the same. In other words, an air alert will be simultaneously announced in the entire region.

The main idea of the changes is to raise an alarm in case of danger from UAVs not throughout the entire region, but only in the area where there is a real danger.

In fact, this is an attempt to add some common sense to a situation that is typical for many regions, when alarms last for several hours and are announced throughout the entire region, without taking into account how far the enemy drone is from a particular area and how real the threat is. But the alert is announced, and government agencies and educational institutions have to stop working.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has confirmed the start of testing a new airborne alert system. In a commentaryto BBC Ukraine, Interior Ministry spokeswoman Mariana Reva said that the testing of the new system will last for a week, and if it shows itself to be good, it will be introduced in a working mode and possibly extended to the entire territory of Ukraine.

However, according to Mariana Reva, it is still difficult to say how exactly it will work and how the areas for alarms will be determined within the region – all these things will be revealed during the test operation of the system.

“Only later will it be clear how it will work. Then certain components and details will be added,” says the Interior Ministry spokeswoman. According to her, everything may work somewhat differently than the Cherkasy authorities announced.
