on September 12, the International Scientific and Practical Conference “Nut Strategy of Ukraine. Development of industrial almond orchards”, organized by the NGO “Ukrainian Nut Association”.
Why it is important
Ukraine is dynamically developing nut horticulture, but remains a major importer of almonds: in 2024, 3.2 thousand tons were imported, and only in the first six months of 2025 – already 1.8 thousand tons. Against the background of growing consumption, the task of creating own industrial orchards arises.
Practical part
The participants of the conference visited the nursery “Almond Orchards” near Svetlovodsk, where the first almond harvests are already in the third year. Specialists demonstrated the nursery garden, fields with seedlings and industrial plantings, as well as compared the results of cultivation of varieties of Ukrainian, Moldovan and Spanish selection.
Scientific cooperation
The Association concluded a license agreement with the Spanish scientific center CSIC, which allowed to register in Ukraine the varieties PENTA and MACACO with high frost resistance and late flowering. The conference was attended by scientists from NUBiP, MNAU, Institute of Horticulture of NAAS and other institutions.
International exchange
A researcher from Spain, Oleksandra Borodina, arrived in Ukraine and presented the experience of Spanish gardens. The day before the Ukrainian delegation visited Spain, where they studied technologies of growing and harvesting almonds.
Next steps
In the near future the association plans to expand the network of research sites in Ukraine. The plenary part of the conference, where Deputy Minister of Economy Taras Vysotskyy spoke, will be presented in the next publication.
