Ukraine resumes severe power cuts

1 July 2024 12:25

Today, on 1 July, power outage schedules will be in effect throughout the country throughout the day. However, the number of schedules will be increased from 16:00 to 24:00. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the press service of NPC Ukrenergo.

The reason for the increase in restrictions is the growth in consumption due to the heat wave.

“The reason for the increase in restrictions is the growth in consumption due to the heat wave. The thermometer reaches above 30C in the daytime. Today, according to forecasts, consumption is expected to be almost 5% higher than yesterday – on a day off. Please use electricity sparingly. Do not switch on powerful electrical appliances at the same time,”

– the power engineers emphasise.

At the same time, it is noted that the main reason for the restrictions is the consequences of eight enemy missile strikes on the Ukrainian power system since the beginning of this year.

To overcome the deficit, imports and emergency assistance from European countries are being sought. However, due to the scale of the damage, these measures are not enough to maintain the balance in the power system, so blackouts are being introduced for industry and households.

As of this morning, 475 settlements remain without power. Due to the hostilities, there are new power cuts in Donetsk, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Chernihiv regions.

For technical reasons and due to hostilities, high-voltage power lines were disconnected in Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Volyn, Lviv, Poltava, Sumy, and Kharkiv regions. The technical reasons for the outages were related to the impact of heat on high-voltage equipment and power lines.

According to Ukrenergo, yesterday Ukraine was receiving surplus electricity from the Polish power system on an emergency basis. Today, emergency supplies from neighbouring European countries are planned to build up reserves in the power system and reduce consumption restrictions.

During the day, Ukraine will import 28,139 MWh of electricity from Romania, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Moldova, with a maximum capacity of up to 1,567 MW in some hours.
