Fairer electricity limits to be introduced in Ukraine: how much will each region get

Ukraine plans to make changes to the electricity distribution system to ensure a fairer distribution of possible power outages across the country. Yuriy Boyko, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ukraine on Energy, said this in an interview with Kyiv24 TV channel, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"

Boyko noted that the recent return to operation of one of the nuclear units added 1,000 MW of capacity to the power system, which helped to avoid rolling blackouts at the weekend. However, on 9 June, emergency assistance from neighbouring countries had to be used for an hour.

Starting 24 June, Ukraine will change its approach to setting electricity consumption limits by region. Instead of each region being allocated 80% of the available energy, the necessary amount for critical infrastructure will be allocated first. The rest will be distributed evenly among the regions.

“We will subtract the amount of electricity needed for critical infrastructure from the available electricity in Ukraine, and with this bracketed amount, we will set a limit for each region. Relatively speaking, it will no longer be 80% for each region, but, taking into account the criticism that will reduce availability, it will be, for example, 70%. But this 70% will be communicated to each region. The corresponding duration of outages in Ukraine should be levelled out, plus or minus,”

– boyko explained.

According to the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, the tariff increase did not cover the market price of electricity. Ukrenergo predicts the most severe situation with power outages in July.
