New Stratus coronavirus strain detected in Ukraine: what is known and how to protect yourself

A new strain of coronavirus, Stratus, has been detected in Ukraine. In a commentary to [comersant ], epidemiologist Natalia Vinograd explained that the strain manifests itself with stronger respiratory symptoms, but most people have a mild or asymptomatic course due to the existing antibody defense.

Themain symptoms are severe fatigue, cough, and loss of voice. Blood tests often show no changes, indicating that the immune system is late in engaging. Doctors advise to seek medical attention immediately at the first signs.

“There are no new symptoms as such. It’s just a more pronounced pathology of the upper respiratory tract… The prognosis is that this strain will not cause significant complications,” says Vinograd.

In the fall, the virus is likely to start spreading when people return from vacation and children go to schools and kindergartens. At first, children’s groups will get sick, then families, but the incidence rate will be lower among adults.

There are five different coronaviruses circulating in Ukraine, and Stratus, according to the epidemiologist, will continue to mutate and cause small outbreaks. The current wave is expected to subside by October.

Treatment:

  • For risk groups (people with chronic illnesses, the elderly, children under one year old), a visit to a family doctor is mandatory.
  • For the rest, isolation for up to 5 days is recommended to avoid spreading the virus, even among relatives.

We remind you that over the past month, the number of hospitalizations due to coronavirus in Kyiv has increased significantly – from 15 to 68 people. Among those hospitalized are 24 children. All patients have a severe course of the disease and need medical supervision, treatment and oxygen support.
