Prices for quality carrots are rising in Ukraine: what is the reason?

After a long period of stagnation in the carrot segment, which has been observed on the Ukrainian market since early fall, selling prices for these root crops have begun to rise, according to analysts of the EastFruit project, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
According to the daily monitoring of the project, since the beginning of this week, carrots have risen in price by an average of 12% on the Ukrainian market, and today producers are ready to ship these products at 7-13 UAH/kg ($0.17-0.31/kg), depending on the quality and volume of the offered batches of vegetables.
According to key market players, the rise in carrot prices is driven by a marked increase in trade activity in this segment. At the same time, most farms have suspended sales of high-quality root crops in anticipation of even higher prices and have put the bulk of their harvest into storage. They offer only surplus for sale, which resulted in a slight decrease in the supply of these root crops on the market.
However, despite the rise in prices, carrots in Ukraine are currently offered for sale on average 54% cheaper than in the same period last year. At the same time, market participants do not rule out that the upward trend in prices may be a temporary phenomenon. In their opinion, further price increases may motivate farmers to start selling carrots from storage, which will lead to an increase in supply and, as a result, to lower prices.
