Ukrenergo has drawn up power outage schedules for 5 July
4 July 2024 18:02
On Friday, 5 July, hourly outage schedules will be in effect throughout the day. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" reports with reference to the Ukrenergo Telegram channel.
The national energy company warned that a light grey blackout zone may be applied in Kyiv, Kyiv, Odesa, Donetsk and Dnipro regions.
They also added that the power supply to critical infrastructure facilities would not be limited.
What is a “consumption queue”?
A queue is a group of household consumers and businesses that consume a certain number of megawatts. The consumption of each region is divided into 6 queues. The number of queues to be placed in all regions at the same time is determined by the Ukrenergo Dispatch Centre to compensate for the energy shortage in the system. The length of the queue and which queue to disconnect right now is determined by the regional power distribution companies in each region.
Information about each regional power distribution company’s schedule of hourly outages can be found on the official websites of the regional power distribution companies in a particular region and in Kyiv and on their social media platforms.
Reasons for consumption restrictions
The main reason for the use of hourly blackout schedules is the impact of eight missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian power plants carried out by the Russians since the beginning of this year. The losses of the Ukrainian power system exceed 9 GW of capacity. This capacity is equivalent to the peak summer consumption of the Netherlands or Finland.
The power shortage in the system is also affected by increased consumption due to the summer heat. Today, air temperatures are high in the central, southern and eastern regions. When the power returns on schedule, please do not switch on high-powered appliances at the same time. If possible, limit the use of air conditioners.
Current situation in Ukraine’s power system
Due to massive Russian shelling, there is a shortage of capacity in the power system. Yesterday, to partially cover it, Ukraine additionally attracted emergency assistance from the power systems of Poland and Slovakia.
In the Chernihiv region, a Shaheda strike on one of the energy facilities cut off power to household consumers and agricultural enterprises. At the same time, almost 6,000 customers lost power.
In Kharkiv region, an overhead power line of a regional power company was disconnected during the shelling. As a result, the substation and the household consumers connected to it lost power. All consumers have been supplied with electricity.
In Donetsk region, equipment at a power company substation was disconnected due to hostilities. As a result, household consumers and the high-voltage substation’s own needs were cut off.
In addition, the bad weather cut power to 58 settlements. Of these, 48 were in Khmelnytsky region and 10 in Ternopil region.
