The HACC delivered a verdict in the Ukrpatent case: 2 years in prison for participation in embezzlement of UAH 251 million

The High Anti-Corruption Court has approved a plea agreement between a prosecutor of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and the former chief accountant of the state-owned enterprise Ukrpatent. He was accused of aiding and abetting the embezzlement of funds of the state enterprise on a particularly large scale. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the SAPO.
It is about participation in a scheme to embezzle UAH 251 million belonging to Ukrpatent.
According to the decision of the HACC, the accused pleaded guilty to committing an offense under Part 5 of Article 27 and Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The court sentenced him to:
- 2 years of real imprisonment,
- 3 years of prohibition to hold positions related to organizational, administrative and economic functions,
- confiscation of property.
What does a plea agreement mean?
A plea agreement is an agreement between a prosecutor and a suspect or accused person in which the latter voluntarily admits guilt to a criminal offense in exchange for a pre-agreed upon punishment. Such an agreement allows the suspect or accused to receive a predictable and possibly mitigated punishment, and the state to save resources spent on a full trial.
The SAPO notes that the conclusion of the agreement has become an effective mechanism for bringing to justice within a reasonable time. This format allows to ensure the inevitability of punishment without delaying the trial for years.

The Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office emphasizes that it will continue to use all available legal tools to expose corruption schemes and bring those involved to justice, in particular in cases of abuse by officials of state-owned enterprises.
