For the first time, Ukraine will introduce free vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV) for girls aged 12-13 years as part of the national Vaccination Schedule. This was announced by the Ministry of Health, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The State Enterprise Medical Procurement of Ukraine has already signed a contract for the purchase of the most modern 9-valent vaccine, which provides protection against the nine most common types of HPV, including seven highly oncogenic types. According to the WHO, types 16 and 18 cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases.

The first delivery is expected at the end of 2025. The procurement was carried out under the mechanism of managed access agreements (MAA), which made it possible to negotiate a favorable price directly with the manufacturer.

The Ministry of Health emphasizes that this is a strategic step in the field of public health and harmonization of the Ukrainian Vaccination Schedule with international standards. Vaccination is recommended before the start of sexual activity, as this is when it is most effective.

Currently, a single free HPV vaccination for adolescent girls is provided in 75 countries, and in total, the HPV vaccine is included in the national immunization programs of 149 countries.

In addition, the Ministry of Health has initiated a large-scale update of the Vaccination Schedule starting in 2026, including the wider use of combination vaccines and updating the immunization schedule according to age.
