10 September 2025 15:54

On the morning of September 10, a tragedy occurred in Shargorod, Zhmerynka district, Vinnytsia region: two schoolchildren – students of the 10th and 11th grades of a local lyceum – died of stab wounds. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The attacker attacked the children on their way to school, stabbing them in the neck. Despite doctors’ attempts to help, the teenagers died.

Who is the suspect

Police detained a 23-year-old local resident who turned out to be their former teacher.
A notice of suspicion and a request for a preventive measure in the form of detention are being prepared.

The investigation

  • The pre-trial investigation is being conducted under the article on the premeditated murder of two people (Article 115(2)(1) of the Criminal Code).
  • The group of prosecutors is headed by the head of the Vinnytsia Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Oleh Tkalenko.
  • An investigative team is working at the scene, and urgent investigative actions are underway.

Why it resonates

The fact that the suspect was a teacher who used to work at the same lyceum where the victims studied shocks the community. The tragedy affects several sensitive areas at once – the school, children, and trust in teachers– which makes this case especially socially significant.

Shargorod is a small town in the Vinnytsia region where most residents know each other well.

Similar cases of attacks on students by teachers have practically never occurred in Ukraine, making the tragedy unique in terms of the scale of the social shock.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in 2023-2024, isolated cases of juvenile delinquency were recorded in Vinnytsia region, but no attacks on children by adult educators were recorded.
