Easter 2024: the cost of an Easter basket has risen significantly over the year

The Easter basket in 2024 will be 17.6% more expensive than last year’s and will amount to UAH 1,422. This is reported by the Institute of Agrarian Economics, Komersant ukrainskyi 
reports.
According to the calculations of the scientists of the Institute of Agrarian Economics, in 2024, traditional Easter cake, eggs, home-made sausage, pork, lard, butter, soft and hard cheeses, horseradish and salt will cost about UAH 1422.05 for a family of 4, which is 17.6% more expensive than last year, when the same set of products cost UAH 1208.78.
It is noted that the cost of the main component of the Easter basket – homemade Easter cake according to the traditional recipe – will be UAH 179.8 per 1 kg, which is 5.8% higher than the cost of Easter cake in 2023 (UAH 169.88).
In shops and supermarkets, ready-made Easter cake will be more expensive, as its price depends on the ingredients and decoration of the baked goods.
According to the Institute, meat products traditionally remain the most expensive components of the Easter basket. Compared to the previous year, home-made sausages cost UAH 380-420 per kg (14.3%), pork – UAH 500-540 per kg (14.2%), and lard – UAH 210-280 per kg (3.1%).
Compared to 2023, the price of hard cheese increased by 31.9% (450-550 UAH/kg), soft cheese by 23.0% (37-45 UAH per 200 g pack), and butter by 16.4% (73.2-80.5 UAH per 200 g pack).
The price for 250 g of horseradish will be UAH 26 (UAH 25-29) and will depend on the manufacturer and flavour components, and the price of salt (100-150 g) is also symbolic – UAH 3.
If the Easter basket is supplemented with other, non-mainstream ingredients, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, apples, red wine (cahors), its price will rise to UAH 1652.05. This is 12.9% higher than the cost of last year’s basket of the same composition of UAH 1463.28, said Yuriy Lupenko.
